Questions for Making Informed Choices

When a test or treatment is offered, remember to ask:

  1. What is the problem we are trying to fix?

  2. What are the benefits of the test or treatment?

  3. What are the possible risks or side effects?

  4. What are the chances it will work?

  5. If it doesn't, what next?

  6. How is the procedure done?

  7. What are the possible alternatives?

  8. Is the situation urgent, or is it possible to wait a while?

Why ask questions about your care?

Women who feel like they participated in the decision making about their medical care are often the most satisfied with their babies' births.  Asking your care provider to discuss the reasoning behind their medical treatments allows them to see your point of view and to individualize their care plans to your preferences and goals.
